The Clan/Sept HistoryMoore was originally Ó Mórdha, from the Gaelic word "mordha" meaning 'noble or stately'. The original sept was located in Co. Laois in the midlands and was one of the seven septs of Laois. There were also Moores who arrived as English and Scottish settlers. The name is very numerous today in Ireland, being ranked as twentieth most popular, and is strongest in the eastern province of Leinster, in particular in Dublin and its original homeland of Laois.
