The Clan/Sept History

The name Maloney is the Anglicisation of Ó Maoldhomhnaigh, which means 'descendant of the servant of the church'. The sept was originally located in Tulla, Co. Clare, in the south west of Ireland. The clan had strong ties with the church, having two of their flock as successive Bishops of Killaloe. The name is now ranked at ninety seventh most numerous surname in Ireland, with its strongholds in counties Tipperary, Clare and Limerick.
