The Clan/Sept History
Malone is the Anglicisation of the Gaelic Ó Maoileoin, from 'Maol' meaning 'bald', in reference to Irish monks, and the personal name Eoin, together giving the meaning of 'a descendant of a follower of (St.) John'. The clan originated in Co. Offaly, and had established connections with the Abbey of Clonmacnoise, who had a number of Malone abbots and bishops. The name has now spread from its original homeland, and is popular in counties Clare and Wexford.
